Apart from actively sharing on Undiksha media, Dr. I Gede Margunayasa, S.Pd., M.Pd also shared this in media outside Undiksha. One of them is the Senari activity organized by the Indonesian Teachers Association (IGI) Buleleng on July 25, 2020. The Senari or IGI Buleleng online seminar took the topic of New Design for Elementary School Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Marguna, this seminar started from his communication with one of the young school principals who has always taken part in the activities shared with Marguna since September 2018. He is the operator of Senari activities, I Komang Muliantara, M.Pd.
As a resource person, this lecturer who is also the coordinator of the PGSD study program displays photos of his learning activities with elementary school children and students. Through this photo, he expressed his longing for teaching and learning activities in class, “I really miss activities like this and frankly I miss my students. What about fathers and mothers?” said Marguna then asked the dancing participants who were elementary school teachers.
Seeing environmental changes like now, this Panji-born lecturer explained that what we need to do is adapt. An example of adaptation is in the science practicum course, about how to become skilled at carrying out practicums, for example making hand sanitizer. Then, science learning was also shown which was packaged in the form of comics made by the students. This is proof that students are creative and as a teacher, you must believe in your students.
Recently, online learning, which Marguna prefers to call distance learning, has been very popular. PJJ (Distance Learning) can be done in the form of fully online learning, blended learning, digital learning, communication technology-based learning, and modular learning. However, in essence, learning should not change. The essence of learning that must exist is the process of interaction between students and students, students and educators, and students and learning resources.
The first thing to think about, according to Marguna, is not about LMS (learning management system) but about analysis. This part is important to do but many people don’t do it. An example of analysis, for example, is analyzing which class of students are taught. What can you do? From this analysis, policies can be drawn if, in grade 1, the teacher’s instructions are not to students but to parents. If it’s grade 6, maybe the teacher’s instructions can be directed directly to the students. Apart from that, students also analyze the availability of resources, for example, whether they have books or not, have a cellphone or not, who brings a cellphone, and whether there is an internet package or not. And don’t forget to also analyze your abilities as a teacher. So from this analysis, the teacher can provide appropriate things for his students.
The second most important thing is about design (patterns), teachers must think about the simplest, most complex, and most technical and detailed things. This design has the same pattern, for example, on Monday you study mathematics, and then next Monday you also study mathematics, more like a lesson schedule. So that students know what the teacher will provide during learning. Marguna suggested that the easiest way for teachers to do this is with the PeDaTi system, which is an acronym for Learn, Explore, Apply, and Evaluate.
Learn, what do students learn from? Students can learn from materials, student books, material summaries, the environment, presentation slides, learning videos, and voice recordings from their teachers. Then deepening can be done by providing discussion topics with a difficult level of solution. For example, a discussion about flowers, “Does each flower have the same parts?” Third, apply, students apply what they have learned and discussed. At this stage, the teacher must think carefully because this is where students learn. The way to do this is by making assignments and working on LKPD. Lastly is evaluation, namely seeing the achievement of goals, assessing what students have done, assessing assignments and activities, providing texts, and so on. It needs to be emphasized that teachers must be able to motivate students so that students do their assignments independently. Marguna hopes that teachers will be confident in making the best of the existing conditions, as Manabu Sato said.
Next, Marguna showed examples of e-learning designs at PGSD. In the design, at which meetings the materials and PPTs, discussions, assignments, and exams must be given to students. Then it is also shown how online learning is designed via WA and how teachers carry out management so that their work can be carried out effectively and efficiently. In essence, Marguna concluded that those who know the situation best are the teachers at school who are doing the best they can. Create a learning design carefully based on the results of the analysis and try not to change it. Note down the obstacles and weaknesses as considerations for future improvements. Increase student life skills/project activities by reducing material and remember to always provide feedback.
