Good education cannot be separated from the role of a teacher. During the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers are required to make many changes related to the learning system and ensure that every student can participate in learning. This challenge provides an initiative for SMA Negeri 1 Petang to conduct a curriculum review workshop for the 2020/2021 academic year at the school. The resource person for this activity is Dr. I Wayan Widiana, M.Pd who is a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Undiksha.
Workshop activities were carried out on Saturday, July 18 2020 via the Google Meet application. The participants were teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Petang. At the workshop, Widiana conveyed many things about learning. According to him, in this changing situation, some things cannot change in the learning process, namely there must be a learning plan, learning process, assessment, analysis, and feedback. He then emphasized the importance of assessment which can be done with performance assessments, projects, portfolios, and essays. To respond to assessment or assessment in this new normal era, it is necessary to have a contract, what is called a lecture contract on campus, clear lecture instructions, clear evaluation/assessment instructions, and feedback.
A teacher then asked how to handle his students’ attitude in always submitting assignments at the end of the submission deadline. Widiana then responded by explaining 3 things that can make students like that, first because teachers often tolerate it, second because teachers are not united or do not give the same treatment, and third, children do not respond because learning is less interesting. So teachers must pay attention to this and prioritize the attitudes of the students themselves.
Then a teacher asked again how to deal with students who were hampered by internet access problems and did not have an internet quota for learning. Widiana tries to share her experience when giving online lectures. He had predicted this problem, so in the learning plan, he made a college contract, in the college contract he determined how many times students had to use large amounts of internet quota. For example, based on the college contract that has been made, he takes into account that students use a lot of internet quota when watching videos or using video applications. So he only used the Zoom application at the beginning of the meeting twice, the rest were given a similar assignment or project. Meanwhile, regarding internet access difficulties, he and the students agreed on when they could lecture online. in this case, the lecturer adjusts the lecture time to the students so that service to all students can be provided well.
At the end of the activity, Widiana conveyed her message to the teachers, “This is a form of service as state servants, it is time for us to serve the country, even though there are many shifts that are happening, don’t ever ignore it so that future generations don’t get cut off.” I am one of the lecturers asking you to pay attention to that, don’t be afraid to change because if you are afraid to change then you will be left behind and will only be able to complain. Think about solutions and strategies, don’t let this pandemic be used as an excuse not to be productive as a teacher.” The school also gave a positive response, stating that the information provided was very useful and they as educators at SMA N 1 Petang would try to implement changes in the learning paradigm and ask for guidance regarding the development of learning in the school.
