Dewa Gede Firstia Wirabrata, M.Psi., Psychologist is one of the lecturers at the PG PAUD Undiksha study program who is a member of HIMPSI (Indonesian Psychological Association) Bali attending the Bali Morning Psychology Space event on Tuesday, June 30, 2020. This event is one of the programs of Kompas TV. Firstia was interviewed directly by Kompas TV presenter, Dewi Nitya. On that occasion, Fisrtia discussed the issue of resilience.
According to him, resilience is a person’s capacity to withstand adversity. Or bounce back like resilience. Resilience is important for a person to face the current pandemic conditions because this condition is a problem that has recently occurred and has a significant impact on society. Especially in this new normal era, how should we live even though the pandemic is not over? The environment also greatly influences a person’s level of resilience, whereas a sporty environment can actually increase a person’s resilience.
In the second segment, Dewi Nitya as the presenter again asked about what a supportive environment looks like. This psychologist, who is familiarly called Kak Dewa, began to respond to how a person perceives their environment. According to his perception, a supportive environment is an environment that often provides motivation. There are 4 components of resilience, namely IQ, EQ, SQ and the newest is AQ (Adversity Quotient). AQ is a person’s intelligence in facing obstacles or difficulties. So the key is to always think positively and this does require practice. The method is with CORE, C (control) which means control of how society can control a conflict. Then O (origin and ownership) means source and ownership, so it’s about how to identify the source of the conflict experienced, for example from hoax news. R (reach) means reach, which is about how we limit the scope of the problem, and E (endurance) means endurance about how long we can face difficulties/adversity
In the third segment, Nitya again questions what if someone cannot be resilient. “Because different people’s levels of resilience differ, the impact is different. The impact of not being resilient can be felt in the physical and psychological areas. Physical sensations usually include shaking, stomach cramps, dizziness, weight loss, and a decrease in a person’s immunity. Meanwhile, the impact on our psychological area may be that we lose interest in things we used to like, friends we confide in get bored of listening to us vent because the problem is the same, and there is no solution, sensitive to the environment, to the point of significant stress. “These symptoms can be done with a self-assessment at home,” explained Sis Dewa.
If you feel symptoms like that, when should we see a professional? This time Sis Dewa answered it in segment 4. There are several conditions where we need a third person to be more objective in assessing problems and advantages. The third person is already trained in that field. There are 2 types of professionals, namely psychologists and psychiatrists, the difference can be seen from the complexity of the client’s problems. Psychologists usually treat new problems in the form of symptoms, while psychiatrists treat more complex problems. Not only providing psychotherapy but also using drugs to treat clients. In essence, if psychological symptoms occur, you can consult a psychologist early on. According to him, third parties do not actually provide solutions, they only straighten out problems that occur, and the person who finds the solution is still the client himself. Finally, Dewa Firstia invited people who wanted to consult to contact HIMPSI Bali.
